Caught

10 Minutes. 2019.

Featured in 'Open Projections III' at Coventry Cathedral, 2019.

'Caught' attempts to encapsulate the power present within a raging torrent of water. Originating from visual investigations of nature and those especially which could stimulate thoughts and emotions relating to the Sublime, 'Caught' puts the viewer within the chaotic and powerful flow of water surrounded by the thunderous noise generated as it flows and churns. The work attempts to generate the emotions and thoughts theorised by Edmund Burke in his book A Philosophical Enquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful, published in 1757.

“The passion caused by the great and sublime in nature, when those causes operate most powerfully, is astonishment: and astonishment is that state of the soul in which all its motions are suspended, with some degree of horror.”
(Burke 1757, A Philosophical Enquiry…, Part II, Section II)
